JUST ABOUT RIGHT1

I was asked to do this post a couple of months ago on what you beautiful ladies on the curvier side could avoid wearing in order to look proportionate. Sorry for being a bit late on this, but like they say – better late than never.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1.Bold prints: Heavy prints like big polka dots, animal prints or anything that has a print near the bust, belly or hip area can make one appear bigger than they actually are.  If you like prints, go for smaller and delicate ones like this.

2.High necklines: High necklines can make your upper body look heavier than it actually is. Opt for V-necklines to create a flattering look.  You could try a square, round, boat-neck or off- shoulder depending on your comfort. If you have a long neck and smaller upper body, you could also try a collared neckline.

3.Ill fitted garments Ill-fitted clothes can make you look disproportionate. Always get your outfits altered if they don’t fit well. Never go for outfits that are too tight for you. Fit is important. If you love oversized clothing, make sure they fit well at the right places and still give you the oversized look.

4.Shiny fabric: Silk, satin and sequin reflect light and make you look bigger, especially if you are going to be photographed at a wedding or a party. Choose fabrics that absorb light. If you love wearing saris, avoid the ones with a broad border. Opt for slimmer ones.

5.Horizontal stripes: While there are no rules, horizontal stripes can make one look bigger.  Vertical stripes gives a slimmer appearance and makes one look taller.

6.Colors: Blacks, blues and dark colors are your best friends if you are on the bigger side. Even if you’re not, these are must-haves in a wardrobe. They are always a savior.

7.Layer Up: This is the best way to create an illusion of a slimmer frame. Invest in well fitted dark colored blazers, jackets and cardigans. They work well in any season.

Like Coco Chanel said “Fashion is architecture: It is a matter of proportions”. No matter how curvy you are, getting the proportions right is the idea. Research online, try different clothes and fabrics to see what works for you. There’s something out there for every body type. However, these are just pointers to help you and there are no strict rules. No matter what shape you are, love your body, stay healthy and enjoy dressing up. Confidence is key.
